Many of the remote areas of India, like the villages of Varanasi, have little or no access
to medical facilities or to the basic, yet critical, information about what it takes to
maintain adequate health and cleanliness. Because of this, in all of SDI’s education and
literacy programs, health, nutrition and sanitation are emphasized. Our Nutrition & Health
Care Awareness Program teaches students how to get the nutrition they need and how to
prevent common diseases. Village women are taught health and sanitation issues. They
are also taught basic day-to-day cleanliness and sanitation practices, proper body
hygiene and proper cooking methods.
SDI’s Medical Outreach Program travels to villages to give people access to medical supplies and information on a regular basis, as well
as to conduct preventive and primary health care programs, dispense medication, and establish relationships with the local communities.
